Nick Anas, MD Medical Director, Children’s Hospital of Orange County (CHOC) Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and PSF Chief of Critical Care. Dr. Anas has specialized expertise in the treatment of acute respiratory failure, apnea and SIDS and is board certified in both pediatric critical care medicine and pediatric pulmonology. He completed his fellowship training at the University of Rochester and his pediatric training at the Children's Medical Center, Southwestern Medical School in Dallas, Texas where he also spent a year as the Chief Resident. Dr. Anas received his medical degree from the West Virginia University in Morgantown, Virginia. Dr. Anas serves as the President of the Pediatric Subspecialty Faculty. He is Clinical Professor of Pediatrics, David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA.
Jill M. Baren, MD, MBE, FACEP, FAAP Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine and Pediatrics, University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine Department of Emergency Medicine, The Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and The Division of Emergency Medicine, The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. Dr. Baren is an emergency physician with fellowship training and certification in pediatric emergency medicine, Director of Pediatric Emergency Medicine Education for the emergency medicine residency, and Society for Academic Emergency Medicine Board member. She has published over 80 peer reviewed articles, editorials and book chapters; Senior Editor, Pediatric Emergency Medicine textbook; Associate Editor, Academic Emergency Medicine and Journal Watch Emergency Medicine. Principal investigator of a neurological emergencies treatment clinical trial network in Philadelphia and New Jersey; consultant and project advisor for NIH and FDA on children’s participation in clinical trials.
Anjan Batra, MD, FACCDr. Batra is the Medical Director of Electrophysiology at the Children’s Hospital of Orange County Heart Institute and is Assistant Professor of Pediatrics in the School of Medicine at the University of California, Irvine. He is nationally known for his work as a researcher and educator in pediatric cardiology and electrophysiology. His research and scientific findings are reflected in over 40 publications in prestigious national journals and text books. He is a nationally and internationally recognized lecturer on topics in pediatric cardiology and electrophysiology.
Richard M. Cantor, MD, FACEP, FAAP Director, Pediatric Emergency Services, University Hospital, Syracuse, New York; Medical Director, Central New York Poison Control Center; Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine and Pediatrics, Upstate Medical University. Dr. Cantor is nationally known for his work as a researcher and educator in the fields of Pediatric Emergency Medicine and Toxicology. He has held multiple leadership positions in the field of Pediatric Emergency Medicine through ACEP and AAP. He has also served on the editorial and development boards of national curricula including APLS: The Pediatric Emergency Medicine Resource. He received the ACEP Outstanding Speaker of the Year award in 1994 and the ACEP National Education Award in Emergency Medicine in 2002. He is a member of the American Board of Pediatrics and American Board of Emergency Medicine Joint Sub-board in Pediatric Emergency Medicine.
Anthony C. Chang, MD Dr. Chang completed his undergraduate education at Johns Hopkins University with the degree in molecular biology, his medical school education at Georgetown University School of Medicine, his pediatric residency at DC Children’s Hospital, and his pediatric cardiology fellowship at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. He was appointed staff cardiologist at Boston Children’s Hospital with a position in the cardiac intensive care unit and later promoted to assistant professor at Harvard School of Medicine. He was later the medical director of the cardiac intensive care programs at Children’s Hospitals of Los Angeles and Miami Children’s Hospital. He is presently the medical director of pediatric cardiac intensive care service and chief of critical care cardiology at Texas Children’s Hospital and a tenured associate professor at Baylor College of Medicine. He is the chief editor of Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care and also the upcoming Heart Failure in Children and Young Adults. He is an associate editor of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine and is on the editorial board of Cardiology in the Young. He publishes and lectures widely on various topics in pediatric cardiac intensive care as well as heart failure and has been program director for several large international conferences and symposia in these areas.
Karen Frush, BSN, MD, FAAP Chief Patient Safety Officer, Duke University Health System; Vice Chair of Strategic Initiatives, Department of Pediatrics, Duke University School of Medicine; Associate Professor of Pediatrics, Duke University School of Medicine and Assistant Professor, Duke University School of Nursing, Durham, North Carolina. Dr. Frush is nationally recognized for her service on numerous committees and councils to improve patient safety and the emergency care of children, including the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Committee on Pediatric Emergency Medicine, and the AAP’s Safer Healthcare for Kids Project Advisory Committee. She completed the National Patient Safety Leadership Fellowship program and served on the Pediatric Patient Safety Expert Panel for Joint Commission Resources. She is a Master Trainer for the Department of Defense Team STEPPS team training program and was named to the DoD’s Healthcare Team Coordination Program (HCTCP) Technical Expert Panel. She is a committed patient/family advocate and was recently appointed to the Board of Directors of the Josie King Foundation.
Marianne Gausche-Hill, MD, FACEP, FAAP Dr. Gausche-Hill is the Director of Emergency Medical Services and Director of the EMS and Pediatric Emergency Medicine Fellowships at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in Torrance, California. She is a Professor of Medicine at David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. She is nationally known for her work as EMS researcher and educator, and for her leadership in the field of pediatric emergency medicine. She is a nationally and internationally recognized lecturer on topics in pediatric emergency medicine and prehospital care. She has also been integral in the design and implementation of a number of educational curricula in prehospital care and pediatric emergency medicine including: the Pediatric Education for Prehospital Professionals (PEPP) Course, Continuing Education Modules for Basic and Advanced Prehospital Providers, Pediatric Airway Management for the Prehospital Professional, and APLS: The Pediatric Emergency Medicine Resource. In 2004 she was awarded the ACEP National Education Award in Emergency Medicine and in 2005 was awarded the Martha Bushore-Fallis APLS award from the American Academy of Pediatrics. Dr. Gausche-Hill is Co-Chair of the 2008 Advanced Pediatric Emergency Medicine Assembly.
David M. Jaffe, MD, FACEP Dr. Jaffe is the Dana Brown Professor of Pediatrics and Director of the Division of Emergency Medicine at Washington University School of Medicine. In addition, he is the Medical Director of Emergency Services at St. Louis Children’s Hospital. Dr. Jaffe’s research interests are in medical decision-making, with a focus on the febrile child and occult bacteremia, but also with a secondary focus on children with head and neck injuries. He is also interested in research on the management of pain and anxiety in children with emergencies. Dr. Jaffe has been on the editorial board of Pediatric Emergency Care since 1984 and Decision Editor for Annals of Emergency Medicine from 1997-2002 and Associate Editor since 2002. He is past chair of the Section on Emergency Medicine of the American Academy of Pediatrics, a Member of the American Board of Pediatrics, past chair of the Subboard of Pediatric Emergency Medicine and formerly the Treasurer of the Ambulatory Pediatric Association. He has been co-chair of the annual Pediatric Emergency Medicine Fellows’ Conference since 1998. In 2006, he received the Jim Seidel Distinguished Service Award. Dr. Jaffe is Co-Chair of the 2008 Advanced Pediatric Emergency Medicine Assembly.
Chris Koutures, MD, FAAPDr. Koutures is American Board of Pediatrics certified in both general pediatrics and sports medicine. He is an elected member of the American Academy of Pediatrics’ Executive Committee on Sports Medicine and Fitness and will speak at the of the 2008 American Academy of Pediatrics Pediatric/Adolescent Sports Medicine course. His interests include concussion management, overuse injuries, and injury prevention strategies/programs. He was appointed a Team Physician by USA Volleyball and the US Olympic Committee for the 2007 Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He has served as team physician for US Men's Volleyball National Team, Cal State University Fullerton, and Lutheran High of Orange County and Northwood (Irvine) High Schools. He regularly delivers sports medicine lectures and mentors residents at Children's Hospital of Orange County (CHOC), and is the medical director for the Athletic Training Education Program at Cal State Fullerton. He has authored many medical publications and has spoken on sports medicine topics around the country. Dr. Koutures remains a dedicated athlete with particular interest in mountain biking and yoga.
Nathan Kuppermann, MD, MPH, FAAPDr. Kuppermann is a Professor in the Departments of Emergency Medicine and Pediatrics, and the Bo Tomas Brofeldt Endowed Chair and Director of Research of the Department of Emergency Medicine at UC Davis School of Medicine. He is both a pediatric emergency physician and clinical epidemiologist. Dr. Kuppermann has been a federally-funded investigator for many years and has particular interests in the clinical efficiency and utility of laboratory testing in the Pediatric Emergency Department setting. Specific foci of his research include the laboratory evaluation of young febrile children, evaluation of children at risk of diabetic ketoacidosis-related cerebral edema and the laboratory and radiographic evaluation of the pediatric trauma patient. He has served as chair of the Steering Committee of the Pediatric Emergency Care Applied Research Network (PECARN) since it’s inception in 2001. This network is funded by HRSA/MCHB and EMSC and consists of 21 geographically and demographically diverse hospital pediatric emergency departments which evaluate ~ 800,000 children annually.
Julie C R Leonard, MD, MPH Dr. Leonard is an Instructor in Pediatric Emergency Medicine at Washington University School of Medicine/St. Louis Children’s Hospital. She is an investigator for the HRSA/MCHB: EMSC Targeted Issues Grant entitled Predicting Cervical Spine Injury in Children. This study is collecting data from the pediatric hospitals that are associated with the PECARN Network and she has presented this work at the 2007 EMSC Grantees Meeting in Silver Springs, Maryland.
Gregory P. Moore, MD, JD Gregory P. Moore MD JD is an Attending Physician at Kaiser Permanente in Sacramento and also a Clinical Associate Professor at the Emergency Medicine Residency UC-Davis. Prior to this, Dr. Moore spend 9 years at the Indiana University Emergency Medicine Residency as faculty and 4 years as faculty for the Emergency Medicine Residency at Maricopa Medical Center in Phoenix. Dr. Moore completed law school at Indiana University in 2000. He lectures nationally and has written multiple articles on medical-legal topics. His pediatric research and publishing has included early research in Intraosseous Lines and Family Presence During Procedures. He serves on the editorial board of ED Legal Letter and is a reviewer for the journals, Annals of Emergency Medicine and Academic Emergency Medicine.
Brant A. Putnam, MD, FACSDr. Putnam is the Chief of Trauma and Surgical Critical Care at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in Torrance, California. He is an Assistant Professor of Surgery at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and serves as the Associate Program Director for the General Surgery Residency Program at Harbor. He is the Surgical Co-director of the Pediatric ICU and remains active as an instructor for the ATLS course. His research interests include the endpoints of fluid resuscitation in hemorrhagic shock, recombinant factor VIIa, blunt hollow viscus injuries, and trauma quality improvement.
Richard M. Ruddy, MD, FACEP, FAAPDirector of the Division of Emergency Medicine at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center and Professor of Clinical Pediatrics at the University of Cincinnati College Of Medicine. Previous appointments include Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at University of Pennsylvania and CHOP from 1980-85 and Associate Professor of Pediatrics at New York Medical College and Westchester County Medical Center from 1985-91. Dr. Ruddy is a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics, Ambulatory Pediatric Association, American Thoracic Society, American College of Emergency Physicians, Society of Academic Emergency Medicine, and American College of Physician Executives, including membership on several national and statewide committees. He is a past member of the Ohio State Trauma Committee and past Chair of the AAP Executive Committee – Section of Emergency Medicine. Dr. Ruddy is the author of numerous papers, abstracts, books and book chapters, including chapters in the Textbook of Pediatric Emergency Medicine and the Textbook of Pediatric Emergency Procedures. He lectures internationally on a wide range of pediatric emergency medical issues and his special interests and expertise are in trauma care, injury prevention, and acute respiratory disease.
Nicholas C. Saenz , MD, FACS, FAAPSenior Pediatric Surgeon at Children’s Hospital, San Diego; voluntary Assistant Professor of Surgery at University of California, San Diego; and surgical representative to the Advisory Counsel for EMS-C in California. Dr. Saenz is one of 5 pediatric trauma surgeons at Children’s Hospital, which is the only Level I trauma center specifically for children in San Diego County. He is a member of the American Pediatric Surgical Association as well as other national surgical organizations.
Ghazala Sharieff, MD, FACEP Ghazala Q. Sharieff MD, FACEP, FAAP is the medical Director of the Rady children's hospital emergency care center in San diego, California. She is also the director of pediatric emergency medicine for Palomar-Pomerado Health System and California Emergency Physicans. She is a associate clinical Professor at the University of California, San Diego. She is the immediate past-chair of the ACEP pediatric committee. She lectures nationally and internationally in the field of pediatric emergency medicine and is the author of numerous articles, book chapters and original research. Dr Sharieff has received many teaching awards on a local, regional and national level and is a well-known name on the lecture circuit.
Joan Shook, MD, FACEP, FAAP Professor of Pediatrics and Head of the Section of Emergency Medicine, Department of Pediatrics at the Baylor College of Medicine; Director, Texas Children's Hospital Emergency Department. She has held numerous national leadership positions in pediatric emergency medicine including past Chair of the AAP Section of Emergency Medicine, Chief Safety Officer at Texas Children's Hospital, and Adjunct Professor of Administrative Science at Rice University. She was the 2003 recipient of the Golden Award for Excellence in Teaching given by the Department of Pediatrics, Baylor College of Medicine.
Jeffrey Starke, MD, FAAP Professor of Pediatrics and Vice Chair of Pediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine; Infection Control Officer for Texas Children's Hospital; Chief of Pediatrics, Ben Taub General Hospital, Houston, Texas. Board certified in Pediatrics and Pediatric Infectious Diseases, his major research interest is childhood tuberculosis and he has written 90 papers and 30 book chapters on this subject. He has served on numerous advisory groups and boards at the local, state, national and international level. He is former chair of the CDC's Advisory Council for the Elimination of Tuberculosis. He currently serves as the American Thoracic Society liaison to the AAP Committee on Infectious Diseases, is on the editorial board of several journals, and has been on many NIH study sections.
Milton Tenenbein, MD, FRCPC, FAAP, FAACT, FACMT: Director Emergency Services, Children’s Hospital, Winnipeg, Manitoba; Director, Manitoba Poison Control Centre; Professor of Pediatrics, Pharmacology, Medicine and Community Health Sciences, University of Manitoba. He is internationally known as a researcher, educator, speaker and leader within the disciplines of Toxicology and Academic Pediatric Emergency Medicine. His research regarding gastrointestinal decontamination and membership on an international consensus panel contributed significantly to the change in the approach to the initial management of the overdose patient in the Emergency Department. He is the author of 200 publications and 30 book chapters. He has served for many years on the organizational committees of several continuing professional development courses including the North American Congress of Clinical Toxicology, the European Association of Poisons Centres and Clinical Toxicology Annual Congress, the American Academy of Pediatrics PREP:EM Course and the Canadian Pediatric Society Annual Meeting. He has served as the President of the American Academy of Clinical Toxicology and the Canadian Association of Poison Control Centres and is the current Chair of the Executive Committee of the American Academy of Pediatrics Section on Emergency Medicine. He has received the Career Achievement Awards from the European Association of Poisons Centres and Clinical Toxicologists and from the American Academy of Clinical Toxicology.
